DELTA, B.C. – Delta residents will once again have a chance to receive a free tree for their property as the City’s Planting Our Roots program returns for its third fall season.
The program has distributed more than 1,250 trees since launching in 2024, with the City saying the initiative is helping strengthen Delta’s urban tree canopy and local biodiversity.
“I’m pleased to see this program continuing to grow, delivering more trees to residents across our community,” Mayor George V. Harvie said. “Planting Our Roots has become something residents look forward to each spring and fall, enabling them to play a role in adding to our urban canopy.”
Online registration opens at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, September 22 and closes at 11:59 p.m. on Thursday, September 24, coinciding with National Tree Day on September 23.
Eligible households can submit an entry, with 250 recipients selected through a random draw.
Residents can rank their preferences from 10 available tree species. Options include Garry oak and vine maple, which the City identifies as native to B.C., along with Crested Japanese cedar, Dawyck Purple European beech, Desert King fig, Dura Heat river birch, Forest Pansy redbud, Liberty apple, Saratoga maidenhair tree and Snowcone Japanese snowbell.
Recipients will receive planting and care instructions. Residents are responsible for contacting BC 1 Call before digging and ensuring their tree is planted within their property boundaries.
